Viṣṇusahasranāma

Viṣṇusahasranāma is an Adhyāya (sub-chapter) out of a total 168 from the 13th Parva (chapter) of the epic Mahābhārata, that is Anuśāsanaparva. They are a total of 18 Parvas. The Anuśāsanaparva is traditionally divided into 2 sub-parvas Dāna-dharma Parva (containing 152 Adhyāyas) and Bhīṣma-svargārohana Parva (containing the rest of the 16). The title Viṣṇusahasranāma means 1000 names of (supreme Hindu deity) Viṣṇu. In the text a dying Bhīṣma is giving king Yudhiṣṭhira a speech on spiritual philosophy and liberation after succumbing to his death during the Kurukṣetra war. The text is considered particularly important for the Vaiṣṇava school of Hindu philosophy. Viṣṇu is attributed to be paramount in the incarnation of beings and deities. 1000 names of Viṣṇu and similar themes are also present in the Paḍma, Garuḍa and Skanda Purāṇa texts. This Ms. contains the following speaker introduction titles Vaiśampayana, Yudhiṣṭhira and Bhīṣma Uvāca. In (f.20a-21a) from verse No. 22 there are 5 verses which are not present in the popular edition containing speaker title Arjuna and Śrībhagavāna Uvāca. This Ms. is written 7 lines per folio. Cover and back page contain title enclosed in a red hexagon and horizontal and vertical margins creating a frame. There are 2 double red vertical margins on each side of the folio. Some folios are coloured yellow. The Ms. is dated Saṃvata 1919 in (f.20b) and Śaka 1784 in (f.21a).




Ātmabodha

An Advaita philosophical text composed in 68 ślokas in Anuṣṭubh metre by Śaṃkarācārya, this work explores jñānayoga and the knowledge of the Self. Śaṃkarācārya outlines the qualities of a person eligible to follow the path of self-realization. It also discusses the nature of the world (saṃsāra), māyā, ātman, Brahman (Universal Consciousness), and liberation. The influence of the Upaniṣads is especially prominent in this work. This Ms. is written in 10-12 lines per folio. Back page contains title. Title also present in colophon (f. 4a). Mistakes are covered with yellow or crossed out. Some corrections and addition in the margins. Some folios treated with yellow turmeric powder. Significant syllables and words rubbed with orange powder for highlighting. The Ms. is dated śaka 17 and saṃvat 18 with only the century number indicated, which establishes a date range from 1778-1842.




Ātmabodha

An Advaita philosophical text composed in 68 ślokas in Anuṣṭubh metre by Śaṃkarācārya, this work explores jñānayoga and the knowledge of the Self. Śaṃkarācārya outlines the qualities of a person eligible to follow the path of self-realization. It also discusses the nature of the world (saṃsāra), māyā, ātman, Brahman (Universal Consciousness), and liberation. The influence of the Upaniṣads is especially prominent in this work. This work is similar to Item 1112. This Ms. is written in 9 lines per folio. Cover and back page contains title. Title present in colophon (f. 5a). There are quadruple margins on each side of the folio with red in between. Mistakes covered with white or blacked out. Some corrections and additions in the margins. The (Pūrna Virāma) full stop style vertical brackets are in red.




Ātmabodha

An Advaita philosophical text composed in 68 ślokas in the Anuṣṭubh metre, along with a commentary—both ascribed to Śaṃkarācārya—this work explores jñānayoga and the knowledge of the Self. Śaṃkarācārya outlines the qualities of a person eligible to follow the path of self-realization. The text also discusses the nature of the world (saṃsāra), māyā, ātman, Brahman (Universal Consciousness), and liberation. The influence of the Upaniṣads is especially prominent throughout. This work is similar to Item 1242. This Ms. is written in 8-12 lines per folio. Cover page contains title. Title also present in colophon (f. 13b). Mistakes are covered with yellow or crossed out. Corrections and addition in the margins.




Ātmānanda

This manuscript contains the 12th chapter (Ātmānanda-prakaraṇa) of the Pañcadaśī, composed by Vidyāraṇyamuni. The main text is written in the center of each folio, while the commentary appears in the upper and lower margins. The commentator, Rāmakṛṣṇa, authored the Tātparyadīpikā, which accompanies this chapter. This chapter focuses on ordinary people who lack sufficient understanding and knowledge to grasp Brahman-bliss, and it aims to guide them toward that realization through detailed explanation. Ātmānanda is a Treatise on Advaita(non-dualistic) Vedānta school of Hindu philosophy. This Ms. is written in 14-18 lines per folio. Cover and back page contain title. Title and commentary title Brahmānanda Ātmānanda present in colophon (f. 13a). There are double red vertical margins present on each side of the folio. The (Pūrna Virāma) full stop style vertical brackets and word divisions are in red. Mistakes are covered with yellow or blacked out. Some corrections and additions in the margins. The Ms. was originally part of a larger manuscript that was divided into parts Ms. Coll. 390; Items 890, 891, 892, 893, 894, 895, 896, 897, 898, 899, 900, 902, 903, and 904.




Ātmanātmaviveka

Ātmānātmaviveka is an Advaita philosophical text commonly ascribed to Śaṃkarācārya, but the manuscript mentions the author's name in the colophon as Prakāśayogindra, identified as Svayamprakāśa. The text discusses the nature of the self and non-self. This Ms. is written in 9-10 lines per folio. Title present in colophon (f. 6b). Mistakes are covered with yellow or blacked out. Some corrections and additions in the margins. Significant syllables and words rubbed with orange powder for highlighting.




Ātmānātmavivekacūḍāmaṇi

An Advaita Vedānta philosophical treatise, composed in the form of a dialogue between a guru (master) and śiṣya (pupil), discusses self-knowledge and the longing for liberation, and is attributed to Śaṃkarācārya. In the colophon of the manuscript, it is mentioned that Śaṃkarācārya was the pupil of Govindapāda, and he is addressed here with the epithet 'Bhagavatpāda'. This manuscript is composed of 570 ślokas. After completing the Ātmānātmavivekacūḍāmaṇi text, the scribe gave his name as Sakhārāma, who lived in Anantagrāma. This Ms. is written in 10-15 lines per folio. Title present in colophon (f. 27a). Ātmapurāṇa

An Advaita philosophical work, it contains the essence of the principal Upaniṣads and is composed in 18 chapters by Śaṃkarānanda, a pupil of Ānandātman. This work is also known as Upaniṣadratna or Upaniṣad-sārārthaprakāśa. The manuscript contains the ninth chapter, which discusses the ‘Yama–Naciketas-saṃvāda’ from the Kaṭhopaniṣad. It is an incomplete manuscript, containing only 123 verses. This Ms. is written in 12 lines per folio. Cover and back page is blank. Title present in marginal abbreviations. There are double red vertical margins present on each side of the folio. The (Pūrna Virāma) full stop style vertical brackets. Mistakes are covered with yellow or blacked out. Some corrections and additions in the margins. Some folios are treated with yellow turmeric powder.




Ātmārpaṇastuti

A devotional text composed in 50 verses in praise of Lord Śiva by the well-known Advaitin scholar Appaya Dīkṣita (16th century). In this work, it appears that he drew inspiration from Śaṃkarācārya’s Śivānanda-laharī (Vasudeva, 2012, pp. X–XII). This Ms. is written in 10-12 lines per folio. Title present in colophon (f. 4b). Mistakes are covered with yellow or blacked out. Some corrections and additions in the margins. Maṅgalavākya in the begining of the text is dedicated to deity Śiva rather than Gaṇeśa which is common.
